Reko Rennie’s new solo exhibition Neo Geo references the art movement of the same name that occurred in the mid 1980s. Using ‘new geometry’, Rennie re-defines his relationship to diamond patterning, unique to his indigenous Kamilaroi heritage.
This new body of work draws on the traditional Kamilaroi practice of carving and inscription and extends it to Rennie’s use of the spray-can. Spray-can totem poles rendered in bronze take on traditional tree markings of diamond patterning.Expanding on an exploration of the spray-can as message stick, Rennie’s monumental bronze totems, imbue the spray-can motif with the gravity of a modern cultural artifact.
