Roy Ananda

BIOGRAPHY

Based in Adelaide, Roy Ananda has exhibited widely in Australia and more recently overseas. Selected group shows incIude, I’ve been busy at Artspace, Adelaide, Hatched at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in 2003, Hedgemaze, Prospect Gallery Adelaide, Linear, Studio Gallery and The New New survey exhibition of Contemporary South Australian Art, Adelaide, (multiple venues) in 2010. Other group exhibitions in 2011 include The Garden of Forking Paths, Gran Pirrie, Sydney, Home Stories, Adelaide Central Gallery and Imaging Interiors, Jam Factory, Adelaide.

In 2004 Ananda’s Drawing Cubes were included in the Primavera at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and then toured to Canberra in The 2004 Australian Drawing Biennale, Australian National University, Canberra.

Ananda has received a number of commissions of which include The Flipside at The Substation, Singapore 2008 with the support of the Australian High Commission. Curated by Peter McKay in association with the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, the exhibition bought together a selection of prominent Australian artists.

Major solo exhibitions include; Mentor Mentored at the Contemporary Art Centre of SA in 2005, A is for Anvil at West Space, Melbourne 2006, Put a sock in it, 2008 and Terraformer, 2009 (both at dianne tanzer gallery + projects) Big Racket, Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale (2008); and Permission Slip, Gallery 4a, Asia-Australia Arts Centre, Sydney (2008). His work has been collected by Artbank and subsequently exhibited in the 2008 Melbourne Art Fair.

Ananda’s work is housed in the Artbank collection which was exhibited in the 2008 Melbourne Art Fair.

In 2010, Ananda was the South Australian recipient of the Qantas Foundation Art Award. Ananda is also active as a writer and lecturer; he is currently Acting Head of Sculpture at Adelaide Central School of Art.
